Vintage desktop mechanical clock “Molnija”, USSR, Soviet, 1960s
I don’t know if they work, I haven’t checked.
About this piece
A handsome mechanical desk clock by Molnija, the renowned Soviet watchmaker. The cream dial is framed by an orange-tinted ring and marked with applied bar indices and decorative starbursts at each quarter-hour; the maker’s name is inscribed in script across the upper dial. Three brass hands track the hours, minutes and seconds with quiet precision. The brushed-steel case is substantial and squared, with small finials at cardinal points, and rests on a dark stone or slate plinth base.
Molnija (meaning “Lightning”) was celebrated for reliable, practical timekeeping across the Soviet era. This piece, dating to the 1960s, exemplifies the period’s unfussy modernist aesthetic—functional, elegant, built to last. The dial shows light patina consistent with vintage use, and the case bears the gentle wear of decades on a desk or shelf. Whether as a working timekeeper or as a striking mid-century sculptural object, it captures the character of Soviet industrial design at its best. We have not tested the mechanism; a qualified horologist can advise on service and restoration should you wish it running.
