On one side is the Crucifixion, and on the other side is the inscription “Spasi i Sokhrani” (“Save and Protect”).
About this piece
This Russian Orthodox cross pendant is cast in silver and features the Crucifixion on the obverse, with carefully modelled drapery and anatomical detail typical of devotional metalwork. The reverse bears the Cyrillic inscription “Спаси и Сохрани” — “Save and Protect” — a traditional blessing invoked for the wearer’s safety and spiritual wellbeing.
Made in the final years of the Soviet Union, when religious practice was cautiously beginning to resurface in public life, the piece carries the understated craftsmanship of that transitional moment. The silver has developed a gentle patina consistent with age and wear, whilst the raised details remain crisp. A simple loop at the crown allows it to hang from a chain or cord. The scale is modest and portable—ideal for wearing close to the body as a personal talisman. Light surface marks and the patina speak to genuine use rather than display condition, which only deepens its character as a lived object of faith.
