Vintage Russian Traditional Wooden Jewelry Box
About this piece
A sturdy wooden jewellery box in the Russian folk tradition, crafted from solid wood with a warm honey-brown patina. The hinged lid is decorated with an inlaid scene of traditional architecture—a cluster of Russian buildings with characteristic onion domes and pitched roofs, rendered in contrasting wood tones. The lower edge of the lid bears a carved ornamental border in a repeating geometric pattern, a hallmark of Eastern European folk craftsmanship.
Inside, the box offers practical storage with a wooden base and corner supports. The finish shows honest wear consistent with age and use: the lid’s inlay has developed a soft lustre, and the wood bears the expected marks of decades of handling. The label affixed to the underside appears to be Soviet-era inventory documentation. This is a functional keeper of the Russian domestic tradition—the sort of box that would have held treasures in a family home. A genuine piece of mid-twentieth-century folk craftsmanship, it remains perfectly serviceable for jewellery, small treasures or simply as a decorative object that speaks to its provenance.
