Pendant with Brazilian agate. Nickel silver with blackening. Vintage.
About this piece
A striking cameo-style pendant carved from banded Brazilian agate, its warm cream and cognac tones revealed in profile relief against a dark backing. The stone is set in a nickel-silver surround with a twisted rope edge and blackened finish, which intensifies the contrast and lends the piece a distinctly nineteenth-century sensibility. The bail is substantial and plainly finished, suitable for a chain or cord.
The carving is accomplished: the hair and facial features show good definition, and the agate’s natural banding has been skilfully worked into the design. Surface wear and patina are light; the blackening remains even across the frame. This is the sort of practical, unfussy piece that would have appealed to the Victorian or Edwardian collector — handsome enough for daily wear, durable enough to last generations.
