About this piece
A compact travel chess set from the Soviet era, designed to slip into a pocket or bag. The pieces are hand-carved from bone or ivory-coloured resin, with a satisfying weight and smooth finish. White pieces stand against black, ranked on the board with numbered squares for reference—a practical touch for players reconstructing games or solving puzzles on the move. The board itself folds into a cream-coloured case embossed with a horse’s head, a motif suggesting quality and tradition.
One piece has been thoughtfully replaced using the same material and style, maintaining the set’s integrity. The magnetic base keeps pieces secure during travel, essential for a game designed to be played anywhere. A set of magnetic checkers comes with it, doubling its play value. The case shows gentle wear consistent with age and use, the pieces retain their subtle patina, and the whole set carries the understated charm of Soviet practical design—functional, durable, made to last.
