About this piece
A charming silver sewing kit housed in a decorative thimble-shaped case. The cylindrical body is ornamented with scrolling foliate engraving typical of late 19th-century metalwork, with a rolled rim at the base and a hinged cap. Inside lies a compact sewing set, accessed by unscrewing or lifting the top section.
The attachment cord is woven in stranded silk or cotton in jewel tones—gold, red, blue and green—finishing in a small loop for carrying or securing to a chatelaine or pocket. Such compact sewing kits were treasured portable companions, often gifts or keepsakes. The case shows fine patina consistent with age and occasional handling; the engraving remains crisp and the hinged mechanism sound. A delightful example of Victorian practicality combined with ornamental craft.
