Vintage sterling silver cross “ safe and protect”
Спаси и сохрани
About this piece
A beautifully crafted sterling silver cross pendant bearing the inscription “Спаси и сохрани” — “Safe and protect” in Russian. The ornate design features scallop-shell detailing at the base and delicately fanned wingwork at the crossarms, which creates an elegant, almost baroque sensibility. The bail is integral and substantial, ready for a chain or cord.
The pendant shows honest wear consistent with appreciative use: the high points of the relief work have developed a pleasing patina, whilst the recessed areas remain crisper, giving the whole piece welcome depth. The hallmark and metalwork suggest Eastern European origin, likely Russian or Soviet-era craftsmanship. A devotional or protective piece that works equally well worn or kept as a pocket talisman. We recommend light polishing with a soft cloth if desired, and storage in a dry place to maintain the patina.
