About this piece
A tender relic of early twentieth-century Anglican childhood. This 1925 confirmation set belonged to Arthur Pettis, then aged thirteen, and comprises two original pieces: a burgundy cloth-bound Communicants’ Manual by B. W. Randolph, D.D., and the hand-filled confirmation card issued by the Parish of New Tetbury. The manual, stamped with decorative Art Nouveau motifs, guided young churchgoers through the sacramental promises and practices expected of confirmed members—attendance at least weekly, regular prayer, and participation in the Guild.
The confirmation card itself, printed with a bold red cross and formal Church of England language, records Arthur’s admission by the Reverend and his pledge to uphold the rules set forth within. Both pieces show the gentle patina of a century’s keeping: softened edges, slight foxing to the card, and the warm mellowing of aged paper and buckram. Together they represent a milestone of faith and social belonging in interwar England, a moment when a boy became, in the Church’s eyes, a full communicant. A poignant keepsake for the ecclesiastical collector or family historian.
