About this piece
This charming Art Deco medal celebrates two sites sacred to Luxembourg’s Catholic tradition. The obverse presents St Willibrord, the 7th-century missionary, inscribed with ‘Ora Pro Nobis’ and Echternach (the abbey he founded); the reverse depicts Notre-Dame de Luxembourg, invoked as Consolatrix Afflictorum — Solace of the Afflicted. The rectangular panel is framed with elegant Art Deco geometry and embellished with a rose motif, hallmarks of 1930s ecclesiastical jewellery design.
The medal is hand-engraved and signed by its maker, stamped ARGENT (French hallmark for silver) on the upper edge. Weighing 2.29g, it hangs from a sturdy silver bail. Light patina and gentle wear speak to its age and regular devotional use; the relief remains sharp and legible. These medals were worn as talismans or tokens of pilgrimage, treasured by the faithful. A lovely period piece for the collector of religious medals or Luxembourg memorabilia, or as a gift for someone with ties to Echternach.
