Antique turned wooden ceremonial mallet with an engraved shield plaque: “Presented to Misses A & E Bowden by the Compstall P.M. Trustees, April 15th 1893”. Given for laying a memorial stone at the Primitive Methodist (Jubilee) Chapel, Compstall, near Marple, Cheshire. Good age-related condition with natural wear and patina.
The plaque is unmarked white metal.

About this piece
This turned wooden mallet was gifted in 1893 to honour the laying of a memorial stone at Compstall Primitive Methodist Chapel near Marple, Cheshire. The recipients, Misses A & E Bowden, are named on the engraved white-metal plaque set into the head: “Presented to Misses A & E Bowden by the Compstall P.M. Trustees, April 15th 1893”. Such presentation mallets were traditionally used in ceremonial stone-laying and cornerstone ceremonies, marking significant chapel building projects or extensions.
The mallet is turned from solid wood — likely a dense hardwood such as ash or beech — with a substantial spherical head, turned knop, and substantial handle. The turned details show good moulding and the wood retains a warm honey-brown patina. Age-related wear is visible across the surface, consistent with over 130 years of age. The plaque remains securely fixed. This is an excellent example of Victorian Methodist institutional craftsmanship and a tangible record of a local chapel’s jubilee year.
