Butterfly brooch
About this piece
A charming enamel brooch shaped as a butterfly, with boldly coloured wings in deep blue bordered by a scalloped gilt edge. The upper wings showcase a vibrant arrangement of red, orange, pink and yellow flowers with emerald-green leaves, whilst the lower wings feature soft peachy and cream tones with the same botanical detail. The body is articulated, with a tapering thorax set with clear rhinestones and antennae terminating in dark stone heads — a design touch that gives the piece wonderful movement.
The reverse shows a sturdy pin fastening, typical of mid-twentieth-century costume jewellery. Condition is excellent; the enamels are bright and without chips, and the gilt remains lustrous. This is the sort of decorative piece that works equally well pinned to a coat, jacket or even a hat, and sits comfortably as a desk or shelf ornament.
