About this piece
A devotional cross cast in 925 sterling silver, rendered in the traditional Orthodox style. The obverse shows a finely modelled crucifix figure with a scrolled crossbar and distinctive flared trefoil terminals — hallmarks of Russian ecclesiastical design. The reverse is deeply inscribed with Church Slavonic text: the opening words of the Orthodox Prayer to the Holy Cross, “Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered…” Cyrillic lettering covers both arms and base, creating a layered spiritual meaning: worn close to the body, the wearer carries both the image of the Passion and words of intercession.
The pendant measures approximately 2.7 cm including the substantial silver bail, with the cross face itself around 1.6 × 1.2 cm. An oxidised (darkened) finish has been applied to throw the relief work into sharp relief and age the piece authentically. The silver is stamped on the bail with maker’s marks. Surface wear is consistent with gentle use over time; the text and figure remain crisp and legible. This is a working devotional piece rather than decorative jewellery. No chain is included.
